Thomas Edward Smith (Class of 1943)
Mt. Airy, MD
Age 86

He was the loving husband of Barbara Flynn Smith for 56 years. Born April 2, 1925 in Pleasant Shade, TN he was the son of the late Willie Ray and Ethel Sloan Smith. Tom attended Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern at Memphis) before joining the Army Air Corp. during WWII. After WWII he attended University of Illinois and left to join the Army during the Korean War. After the Korean war he got married and received his Masters Degree at American University in Washington DC. He went to work for the Montgomery County School system where he retired in 1980. Tom was a member of the Mason Dixon Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, wine making and woodworking. He was also an avid camper. In addition to his wife he is survived by his daughter Susan Lord and husband Dawson of Mt. Airy; sons Evan E. Smith and wife Dianne of Michigan and Bryan W. Smith and wife Katherine of Woodstock, MD; brothers William ('49) and Jack ('54) Smith of TN; sister Dorothy Allison ('51) of TN and 6 grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brothers Doyle ('33) and Ray ('38) Smith and sisters Martha Pippin ('46) and Jessie Marquand ('36). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 10AM at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of MD, 21031 McCormick Rd., Hunt Valley, MD 21117 or Gilcrest Hospice Care, 11311 McCormick Rd., Suite 350, Hunt Valley, MD 21031.
