It was later renovated and used as the Golf Club Clubhouse in 1926 until the present clubhouse was built in 1939. A later view of the Old Hickory Community Center. The “Y’ building, constructed in the powder plant era, served various recreational needs of employees for over 40 years. Located on Donelson Avenue at the site of the present Old Hickory Community Center, the club included a gym for basketball (at left) as well as a bowling alley, billiards room, soda fountain and barber shop. The gymnasium was used initially in the 1920s for showing silent films, but soon after the advent of “talkies” in 1928 the movies were transferred to the Old Hickory Theater which was equipped for sound. (Like many buildings in Old Hickory, the club’s appearance improved dramatically over the years. The picture above, taken in the early 1940s, reveals a structure and grounds far improved from their early appearance.) |
